Make it Digital / Cornwall Learning Partnership

Create an enterprise programme that teaches young people not in education or employment how to plan a future with digital skills.

Make it Digital is a new digital enterprise programme for young people, designed by Sea. A creative four week programme, we are teaching young people aged 16-19 essential digital skills and helping them to think differently about planning their future.

Working in a design agency environment, students explore the subject of "choices for young people" using a range of digital media - learning skills such as filmmaking, web design/development, communication, animation, scripting, storyboarding and so on.

Real opportunities

During the course, all students receive one to one mentoring from Junction 24. J24 is a specialist youth recruitment consultancy who work with students to understand their skills, strengths, and help them put together an action plan for finding real work opportunities after the course.

Students will also have the opportunity to apply for an internship with Sea Communications after the course finishes if they are interested in learning more about working in design and media.

This is a new course that has been developed by us at Sea as way of understanding barriers to employment for young people and co-creating new solutions.

As Kathryn explains, "The internet has revolutionised the way people communicate with each other, find information and create employment opportunties. As an independent design business, we are in a good position to offer advice and guidance to young people making the transition from school to employment. Most teenagers are already using social networking sites such as Facebook to connect with friends but how many understand the value of their digital skills in employment?"

Digital beginnings

"Our aim is to inspire young people and connect them with relevant employment or apprenticeship opportunties. We will enable students to express themselves creatively and help them to uncover new skills in a non traditional classroom setting. This course will teach practical skills that can be added to a CV and help them find a future job."

Our first group of Make It Digital students have produced some inspiring digital content. They are not a lost generation - they are simply finding themselves! Check out some of the projects here:
